Refractive Surgery Complications: Prevention and Management
Over 20 hours of live sessions and interactive seminars covering the most common intra- and post-op complications. in terms of causes, prevention, and management. The course covers as well the system of postoperative visits, what to look for, when to act and how to act in the case of any complication. It is supported by case discussions, surgical videos, and polls and concluded by guidelines.

Lens-Based Refractive Surgery
Over 15 hours of live sessions and interactive seminars covering phakic IOL implantation and refractive lens exchange in terms of pre-operative workup and diagnostics, essential principles, indications, contraindications, decision-making, safety calculations, and much more. Surgical techniques are discussed through educational videos. The selection of the best IOL is fully covered based on selection criteria and the defocus curve. The course is supported by case discussions and polls and concluded by guidelines.

Laser-based Refractive Surgery
Over 30 hours of live sessions and interactive seminars covering pre-operative workup and diagnostics, essential principles, indications, contraindications, decision-making, safety calculations, and much more. Surgical techniques are discussed through educational videos. Standard and customized laser profiles are discussed in detail, including the topo-guided, wavefront-guided, phototherapeutic (PTK), presbyopic profiles, and enhancement strategies. The course is supported by case discussions and polls and concluded by guidelines.
All sessions will be recorded and available in the Academy library for the attendees to watch the recorded sessions at their pace until the end of Module 2. At the end of the Module, the participants should sit for an exam to get the certificates.

It discusses history taking, examination, interpretation of diagnostics and ancillary tests, patient counseling, and decision-making. After completing his Ophthalmology residency at Alexandria University in Egypt, Ahmed joined Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton, UK, for a fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment diseases.
He was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist at St. James University Hospital, Leeds, and Honorary Lecturer of Ophthalmology at Leeds University in May 2021. He is an experienced laser and lens refractive surgeon and received CertLRS from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in October 2021.
He earned his PhD in Ophthalmology from Alexandria University in September 2020 and his MSc in Ophthalmology in January 2016, focusing on wavefront-customised refractive correction for complex eyes.
He obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth, 2017) and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd, 2016).
Ahmed has published more than 25 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including three book chapters and a textbook on cataract surgery.

Professor of Ophthalmology in the faculty of medicine, Ain Shams University, a fellow of the royal college of surgeons of Edinburgh and a consultant of phaco-refractive surgery in Al-Watany eye hospital in Cairo. Cataract surgery with premium IOLs is his primary focus, together with the implementation of Femtosecond laser technology, which consists of about 30% of his total annual volume of cataract surgery. He started to
implant presbyopia-correcting IOLs since 2002 and has substantial experience in various designs of multifocal, new trifocal, and extended depth of focus IOLs. He has a particular interest in complicated cataract surgery with intra-scleral haptic
fixation (ISHF), together with iris repair and different techniques of pupilloplasty.

He is a Consultant in Cornea, External Eye Disease, and Cataract at the Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton, and a world-leading expert in osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP). He also serves as an Honorary Clinical Professor and Undergraduate Ophthalmology Lead at Brighton and Sussex University.
He is Past President of the Medical Contact Lens and Ocular Surface Association, the British Society of Refractive Surgery, and the Southern Ophthalmological Society. He is the current Honorary Treasurer of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and President of the Brighton and Sussex Medico-Chirurgical Society. He previously served as Honorary Secretary of UKISCRS and as a Council Member and Trustee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
He has held honorary clinical and academic positions in Japan (Kindai University, Osaka), Hong Kong (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Singapore, India, and Alexandria University in Egypt.
A multi-award winner, he was appointed OBE in 2018 for services to ophthalmology.

Francesco Carones, MD, graduated from the University of Milan in 1988 and completed residency at its Department of Ophthalmology. In 1992, he pursued clinical training in refractive surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, USA. He previously served as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Refractive Surgery at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, San Raffaele Hospital, University of Milan.
He is now in private practice as Co-Founder, Medical Director, and Physician CEO of Carones Vision in Milan, Italy, where he focuses on cataract and refractive surgery. Dr. Carones has been involved in refractive surgery since 1989, pioneering excimer laser applications, mitomycin C use after laser surgery, tracker-assisted ablation, and LASEK. He has participated in multiple clinical trials and has been first to implant several IOL designs, including toric multifocal and low-add multifocal lenses. His practice includes phakic IOLs, intracorneal ring segments, corneal inlays, cross-linking, and refractive keratotomy.
He has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and scientific papers, and presents frequently at major international meetings such as AAO, ASCRS, ESCRS, IIIC, and ISRS. Dr. Carones is Associate Editor of the Journal of Refractive Surgery, serves on several editorial boards, is a board member of international ophthalmic societies (AECOS, RSA, WCRSVS), and sits on advisory boards for major ophthalmic companies including Alcon, Johnson & Johnson Vision, Zeiss, Hoya, and WaveLight.

Dr. Hosny, PhD, FRCS (Ed), is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Cairo University and a leading refractive and anterior segment consultant at Dar El Oyoun Specialized Eye Hospitals in Egypt.
After completing his ophthalmology residency in 1997, he served as a fellow in refractive and anterior segment surgery at the University of Alicante, Spain, conducting doctoral research under Professor Jorge Alio. He later worked as a Registrar of Ophthalmology at Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh.
He earned a Master?s degree from Cairo University in 1996, the FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998, and his Doctorate in 1999.
Dr. Hosny has numerous international publications, including contributions to David Ben Ezra?s book Ocular Inflammation. He has been a frequent presenter at ASCRS and ESCRS for over a decade and has served as panelist and co-chair at ASCRS annual meetings.

He is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology and the Immediate Past President of Alexandria University, serving as its first elected president from 2011?2014. He completed a Fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at the Emory Eye Clinic in the USA and previously served as chief of the Corneal and Refractive Unit at Magrabi Eye Centers in Saudi Arabia.
Over 30 years, he supervised and examined more than 70 Master?s and Doctorate theses, promoted refractive surgery throughout the Arab world and the Middle East, and helped establish numerous centers.
He is an active member of leading international ophthalmic societies and has served as a principal investigator and consultant for multiple clinical studies and research projects.
His recognitions include the MEACO Distinction Award (2012), the Life-Time Achievement Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (2013), and the Casebeer Award from the International Society of Refractive Surgery (2012).

Prof. Dr. Rohit Shetty, MD, PhD, is the Vice Chairman of Narayana Nethralaya Eye Institute. He is Professor of Ophthalmology at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Adjunct Associate Professor at MS Ramaiah Medical College in Bangalore, and an Affiliate Associate Professor and PhD supervisor at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
He has authored over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals. His clinical specialties include corneal refractive surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, and electrophysiology.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology awarded him the Achievement Award for his distinguished contributions to the field.

Dr. Shady Awwad, MD, is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of the Cornea & Refractive Surgery Division at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. He received his medical degree with Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society recognition and completed his residency training at the American University of Beirut.
He then completed two fellowships at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas: one in cornea & refractive surgery and another in ophthalmic pathology.
His clinical and research interests focus on analytical corneal imaging, ocular and corneal wavefront analysis, keratoconus diagnosis and treatment, refractive surgery, and intraocular lens calculations.

After completing his training in the United States, Mr. Daya served as Director of Cornea and External Disease at the Catholic Medical Centre and practiced on Madison Avenue in New York. In 1993, he was appointed Director and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon of the Corneo Plastic Unit and Eye Bank at Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Trust in East Grinstead.
In 1995, he performed the first LASIK laser vision correction procedure in the UK and became a widely recognized trainer of the technique. Seeking a higher standard of personalized care than available in private hospitals, he founded Centre for Sight in 1996 as a ?Centre of Excellence? dedicated to world-class medical and surgical eye care.
Under his leadership, Centre for Sight has expanded to three locations and earned a global reputation for exemplary eye care, attracting surgeons and patients from around the world?including high-profile patients such as royalty, presidents, and prime ministers. Prof. Dr. Tarek El-Naggar, MD, FRCS, is Head of the Refractive Surgery Unit and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Department at the Research Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), Giza, Egypt. He is also a Consultant in Cataract, Cornea, and Refractive Surgery at the International Eye Hospital in Cairo.
His clinical and research work focuses on refractive surgery outcomes and complication management, keratoconus treatment, corneal biomechanics, and corneal tomography. He published the first worldwide case report of ectasia after a Femtosmile procedure in JCRS, and received the Best Paper in Session Award at ASCRS 2013 in San Francisco, CA.
Dr. El-Naggar serves as a reviewer for several ophthalmology journals, including JCRS and IJO.

Dr. Tiago Pacheco Teixeira Monteiro, MD, FEBO, FEBOS-CR, PhD, is an Ophthalmology Assistant at Hospital de Braga, Portugal, where he has served since 2010 and is the Coordinator of the Anterior Segment Department (Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery). He is also an Invited Professor at the Medical School of the University of Minho in Braga.
He earned his Medical Degree from Porto Medical School, University of Porto (2004), became a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology in 2015, and received the Specialist Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (FEBOS-CR) in 2018. He completed his PhD in Medicine at the University of Minho in 2021.

Professor Yehia Salah ElDin Mostafa, MD, MSc, PhD, is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University. He is the Chairman and Founder of eyeCare Center in Maadi (2009?2020), and a consultant and co-founder of Al Ayoon Al Dawly and Dar Aloyoun Eye Hospitals.
He completed his MBBC at Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine in 1986, MSc in Ophthalmology in 1991, and PhD in Ophthalmology in 1994. He undertook multiple international fellowships, including oculoplastic fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital (London) and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and a phacoemulsification clinical fellowship at Klinik Dardenne in Bonn, Germany. He was among the first surgeons to introduce modern phacoemulsification in Egypt and the Middle East in 1993.
He has held academic roles at Cairo University since 1991, progressing from Assistant Lecturer to full Professor in 2005. He is a past president of the Egyptian Society of Keratoconus and Corneal Transplant (ESKCT), and a past board member of several national ophthalmic societies.
Prof. Yehia is the author of Phacoemulsification: A Step-by-Step Guide (2007, second edition 2020), the first book on the topic published by an Egyptian or Arab ophthalmologist. He has delivered hundreds of lectures and courses nationally and internationally, with special expertise in cataract surgery (children and adults), corneal surgery, and refractive surgery.
